This year was my first as a full-time freelancer. We made it! I say we because I truly could not have done it without so many friends, editors, coworkers, and union buds who helped me at every turn, from looking over first drafts to always pushing me to ask for more money. As my supportive boyfriend the hot duck says, weep weep! Here are some of my favorite pieces I published in 2019:
I went on two (2) separate tours with Pop Up this year, for a grand total of 17 shows across the country, and it was some of the most fun and interesting work I’ve ever done. I love tour! While that work is ephemeral by nature, I also wrote an accompanying feature for California Sunday Magazine about the long, loving search for Betsy, a cow that has been on the run for over a year in Anchorage.
A review of Wesley Yang’s essay collection.
I’m a media bad boy and I know how.
A profile of Elizabeth Warren.
A profile of Wilhelm de Blasio.
Interviews with women from five countries with universal health care systems—Canada, Iceland, Taiwan, Australia, and the UK—about their daily interactions with their country’s medical systems.
My shirt is wrinkled, never put me on camera again.
On Cardi B (my mom) interviewing Bernie Sanders (my other mom).
A gif of me, when I see my enemies having little a salami online.
Thank you to Clover for accepting my good blog pitches. Here is my profile of Luna Tolentino, the next big dog.
And here is my blog about my best friend, jacket.
RIP to the good blogs Clover rejected, I guess she can’t be right all the time.
See you next year!
